SUMMARY:

This is a DEP licensed position responsible for aiding in the proper and efficient operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Under the direction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Assistant Superintendent, this position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and collection system including, but not limited to: troubleshooting, making process adjustments, completion of DEP required paperwork and reports, assistance in the laboratory, general maintenance and repair of equipment and pumps, maintenance and repair of pump stations and dry wells, operation of sludge press, opening of sewer clogs, general repair, maintenance and cleaning of work areas and facilities.

 

LEVEL OF SUPERVISION/SUPERVISORY RESPONSBILITIES

Work is performed under the specific guidance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Assistant Superintendent.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes but is not limited to the following):

  • Assist the Assistant Superintendent in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment and collection system.

  • Operate Various equipment: Vac Truck, CCTV Truck, Plow, etc.

  • Proactively identify any operational or maintenance issues or concerns and promptly bring to the attention of the Assistant Superintendent and Lead Operator.

  • Check all assigned areas every day and perform all required troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair equipment, facilities, pumps, pumping stations, collection systems, etc.

  • Sample wastewater using automatic and manual sampling methods and performs laboratory analysis as required in Township laboratory.

  • Ability to identify process control issues and/or maintenance issues and make suggestions to Assistant Superintendent for recommended appropriate course of action.

  • Make routine and non-routine process control adjustments under the direction and guidance of the Assistant Superintendent and Lead Operator.

  • Maintenance and repair of pumps and air compressors as well as other equipment including oil changes and other routine periodic maintenance.

  • Cleaning, maintenance, and replacement of all components of the treatment process.

  • Opening of sewer clogs.

  • Analysis of equipment problems to identify malfunctioning parts.

  • Strong electrical troubleshooting and repair skills preferred, including the ability to disassemble motors, rewire units, service power supplies, and diagnose and maintain electrical panels for safe and efficient operation

  • Meter reading as required.

  • Accurately maintain all required logs and documentation and assist with preparing weekly, monthly and other reports as required.

  • The ability to work independently at times and take work orders from start to finish.

  • Must be willing to respond on a 24/7 basis to emergency situations that may arise and have the ability and willingness to work more than 8 hours per day when necessary. Holidays and weekends are on a rotating schedule.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED and minimum of age 18; Completion of a DEP approved WWTP Operator Certification Program is preferred.

 

Previous experience operating and maintaining a wastewater treatment plant and collection system is preferred. Must have strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills on a variety of equipment. Must have general knowledge, electrical background preferred and experience in industry safety practices.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must be able to read, write, and understand English at a level sufficient to conduct required duties. Must be able to follow moderately complex directions given both orally and in written form. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as addition, division, multiplication, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve routine and non-routine practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions given in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to understand, remember, and conduct sometimes complex and/or multi-step oral and written directions.  Ability to plan a sequence of operations and to think and reason logically and analytically when making decisions.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS:

  • Class B and E Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Certificate/License with Subclasses: 1, 2, 4 or ability to obtain within 18 months.

  • Valid PA driver’s license with clean driving record. CDL (class B) license with air brake and tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.

 

COMPUTER OPERATIONS:

Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheets and graphics (i.e. Microsoft Office suite), and the ability to effectively learn all other department related software as may be required. SCADA, GPS, and GIS knowledge preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or touch objects, and extend arms to reach as needed.  The employee is required to smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance. Pushing and pulling to manipulate valves with varying degrees of force, reaching over, under, and around equipment. Must maintain balance while walking on tank media, roofs, catwalks, etc. Must be able to climb ladders and work in confined spaces. Removing snow and ice manually and digging manually. Specific vision abilities required of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain, cold, etc. along with exposure to vibration, noise, fumes, odors, dusts, and gases. May require the use of a respirator or other breathing apparatus. The noise level is moderate but can be occasionally loud.

 

OTHER:

Requires current Criminal Background, Child Abuse, and FBI fingerprint clearances along with post-offer pre-employment physical and drug screen. NOTE: Required to provide proof of prior Hepatitis B Vaccine series, begin vaccination series at Township expense upon hire, or sign waiver form declining vaccination.
