Position Summary
UMJA is seeking a qualified operator to support its wastewater treatment plant and collection system. This position performs plant operations, compliance monitoring, laboratory work, Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) program administration, infrastructure inspections, preventive maintenance, and emergency response.
The successful candidate must work effectively both independently and with a team, maintain accurate records, communicate professionally, and comply with all safety and regulatory requirements.
Essential Duties
Operate and monitor wastewater treatment, sludge-processing, pumping, disinfection, and disposal equipment.
Conduct plant rounds, interpret operating data, adjust equipment, and maintain accurate logs.
Collect wastewater and sludge samples and perform routine laboratory testing, calibration, quality control, and documentation.
Complete required compliance monitoring, testing, reporting, and recordkeeping.
Serve as backup to the Laboratory Technician.
Administer the FOG Program through inspections, education, documentation, follow-up, and enforcement coordination.
Inspect manholes, sewer mains, service laterals, new construction, repairs, and rehabilitation work for defects and compliance with approved standards.
Install and monitor flow meters and review data for inflow and infiltration, capacity issues, and unusual conditions.
Assist with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs at the plant, pump stations, and throughout the collection system.
Maintain operational, laboratory, inspection, maintenance, FOG, CCTV, and regulatory records.
Respond to sewer overflows, backups, blockages, alarms, equipment failures, and other emergencies.
Participate in the on-call rotation and perform scheduled weekend and holiday inspections.
Communicate professionally with residents, businesses, contractors, agencies, and municipal departments.
Follow all safety procedures, including confined-space entry, lockout/tagout, traffic control, chemical handling, and PPE requirements.
Inspect, clean, calibrate, and maintain assigned vehicles, tools, instruments, monitoring devices, CCTV equipment, and safety equipment.
Maintain clean and orderly buildings, tanks, vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
Attend required training and maintain applicable certifications.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of wastewater treatment, collection systems, pump stations, laboratory testing, FOG programs, infrastructure inspections, and regulatory compliance.
Knowledge of sanitary sewer overflows, inflow and infiltration, emergency response, and preventive maintenance.
Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and UMJA policies and procedures.
Ability to read meters, gauges, maps, plans, specifications, laboratory results, and equipment manuals.
Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, decision-making, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to operate utility vehicles, light equipment, power tools, and hand tools safely.
Basic computer skills for data entry, electronic records, email, monitoring, and report preparation.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively while prioritizing routine and emergency assignments.
Ability to maintain accurate records and interact courteously with coworkers, contractors, agencies, businesses, and the public.
Physical and Scheduling Requirements
Ability to stand or sit for extended periods and regularly bend, squat, reach, climb, and use stairs or ladders.
Ability to lift up to 10 pounds continuously, 25 pounds frequently, and 100 pounds occasionally with assistance or appropriate equipment.
Sufficient vision and hearing to identify workplace and roadway hazards.
Ability to participate in on-call coverage and respond during nights, weekends, and holidays.
Education, Experience, and Certification
High school diploma or GED required.
Applicable wastewater treatment operator license or certification required, including Class A, Subclasses 1, 4, and E, as required by UMJA.
Relevant experience in wastewater treatment, collection systems, infrastructure inspection, environmental compliance, or laboratory testing is preferred.
An equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience may be considered.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Operators rotate weekend coverage of approximately 2–3 hours per day, along with on-call responsibilities.
